ply phone stacks a whole world of gadgets into one device
The Ply concept phone has so many features stacked into its wooden shell that I had to read about it twice to fully grasp its awesomeness. Each layer holds a gadget with a distinct function, including a phone, game controller, pic printer, and projector (among other things). Zowie! It’s designed by Hideo Kanbara…

Ply Phone KDDI

It’s designed by Hideo Kanbara. If I met him right now I would probably ask him one question: will you marry me? And then hearts and flowers would fly out of his butt, I’m guessing, because anyone who designs this is brilliant and fabulous and genius and all of that.

Ply Phone KDDI

Of course, like so many fabulous things, this is still a concept. And of course, the Ply site, which has loads of pretty photos is all in Japanese. (That is so my bete noire.)

Ply Phone KDDI

They actually made one of these and it’s on display at the KDDI Studio in Harajuku, so if you happen to be in Tokyo right now then feel free to go and check it out.

Ply Phone KDDI

In closing: this is one concept I would love to see become a reality and I will so go on record as promising to pay thousands of dollars for this if and when it becomes a reality.

When it comes to retro game consoles, it seems like Nintendo and Atari get all of the attention. How about some love for the classic ColecoVision, the first console to bring arcade-quality graphics into your living room? This mini ColecoVision casemod is surely a good begin.

Colecovision Mini Casemod

The guys over at GameSniped stumbled onto this custom-modded miniature version of the classic console for sale over on eBay. The mini ColecoVision does everything the original console did, only smaller.

Colecovision Mini Casemod

According to seller doubledownon11, the modded console is a whopping 50 square inches smaller and 1 pound lighter than a stock ColecoVision system. In addition, the system has been upgraded with composite, S-Video and RCA audio jacks. There’s also a handy “intro skip” button, which lets you zip past the annoying 10-12 second loading screen on Coleco-branded games. The one-of-a-kind console is in pristine condition and includes a refurbished ColecoVision hand controller, a Donkey Kong game cartridge, a power supply, and a six foot, gold-plated, A/V cable.

With a current bid of $379.99, it’s about twice what an original ColecoVision would have cost you back in 1982, but adjusted for inflation it’s actually a better deal.

There’s not a whole lot of information to be found about this cool design, but I have the ability to tell you this: the light is made by madreinspain. There’s no pricing info, but their other lights seem reasonably priced in the €100 (about $150 USD) range.

Now if only you could wire them up so they actually controlled your TiVo or something… that would be even cooler.

mega man energy drink helps you beat down robot masters
To herald the launch of much-anticipated game Mega Man 9, an officially licensed Mega Man sports/energy drink is coming out in Japan. The drink will be called “Rockman E Can Drink” because it’s coming out in Japan and Mega Man is called Rockman over there. The drink will cost ¥137, or about $1.25 a can. No word on what it tastes like, though…

This drink brings to mind past retro video game-inspired energy drinks such as Super Mario Power-Up and Donkey Kong Jungle Juice. All of this gives me a great idea. Why doesn’t someone open up a place that has arcade games and serves arcade cocktails? The chef could dress like the chef from BurgerTime, and the waiters could dress like angry pickle slices. Great idea, no?

Envision an army of little tiny UFOs whizzing around your head. Now envision that you could be the one controlling them.

QFO Flying Object from TakaraTomy

TakaraTomy’s mysterious looking QFOs are pint-sized remote controlled hovering spacecraft which spin through the sky. A little propeller mounted on the bottom of a lightweight foam body gives the QFO its flight.

QFO Flying Object TakaraTomy

Each one comes with a rechargeable battery which provides up to 4 minutes of continuous flight on a 30 minute charge.

QFO Flying Object TakaraTomy

In addition to the yellow, blue, red and silver versions, it looks like there’s a retro UFO-style version that’s in the works too.

QFO Flying Object TakaraTomy

QFOs are expected to hit stores in Japan this September. I managed to find them available for pre-order over on Amazon JP for just ¥3520 (appx. $32 USD) but it’s doubtful you’ll be able to get these outside of Japan for a while.

While the QFO homepage isn’t particularly helpful in explaining anything about how these work, it is worth a look for the goofy UFO investigation marketing campaign.
