Chrome OS netbook by Acer in dates and figures
Acer’s plans for 2010 are no longer a secret. Apart from notebooks and the rest of the stuff we got used to see from Acer, they are working on an e-book reader, a tablet personal, an app store and Chrome OS ready netbooks. We can’t wait for all of this lot. Now though we have the ability to tie our impatience with some new facts extracted from Jim Wong’s current interview. Most of Acer goodies, as it turns out, will be available in the second half of 2010. More specifically, Chrome OS netbooks will start shipping in early Q3 waiting for the operating system to come out. Acer plans to sell one million of netbooks by the end of the year. This number is calculated from average expected sales percentage form the total amount of Acer personal sales, so it should be pretty close. One million sounds realistic to me as long as they keep prices below Windows 7 Starter enabled netbooks. And this is very probable though we can’t state for sure because hardware in use is unknown.

I’ve been all excited about getting a 3D Television since hoards of them showed up at CES this year. Some of the first 3D TVs that will be on the market will be from Samsung. Its sets will hit the US and Europe next month and require active 3D glasses.

Samsung Active 3D Glasses

I have had a suspicion that going with active glasses was going to be the norm, not because the tech is superior necessarily, but so the TV maker can charge us an arm and a testicle for the glasses. I was right, at least in Samsung’s case.

The Samsung 3D active glasses needed for its Televisions have turned up for sale and cost $150 per set. That’s right; a family of four will drop an extra $600 on 3D glasses alone. I’d like to kick the guy who made this decision in the balls for all 3D Television fans out there.

Acer Aspire One AO 532-h coming out soon in Japan
Acer has announced a new Aspire One this day. Japan, as always, gets its hands on it first. That will be on January 29th. Most of specs are already known apart from MSRP. So, skipping over that, straight to hardware which I think should make a good value money on whatever market Acer will eventually place the AO 532-h. Its specs are listed after the jump.

We’ve seen a DIY WiFi radio here before, it was built by Jeff Keyzer from mightyOhm. Well it turns out that Jeff’s project inspired this Wifi Radio Project based on a Atmel ATmega8 to be built, this one was made by Gary Dion. As you will read, Gary didn’t copy the project that Jeff did but rather get inspiration from it, many things are done in a different way.  Nice thing about both projects is that when you look at the final product it doesn’t look like a DIY project that’s held together with hot glue and Popsicle sticks like some other projects we have seen (not that there is anything wrong with that).  If you want to make your own Gary have provided the code at the bottom of his article.

“First things first, I had to collect all the parts I wanted to fit into the radio. There would be the Asus WL-520gu router, the USB audio adapter, the vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) I recently found on ebay, various knobs/buttons, and some sort of processor board to pull everything together. For small projects like this, my trusty ATmega8 has never let me down, so I felt it was up to the task.”

Robo-Rex is the brainchild of Alyse and Remi. It’s an awesome LEGO Technics build that they designed themselves. While some of the gears and parts are decorative, a lot of them are used for Robo-Rex’s articulations. The dinolegobot was inspired by this crazy German commercial.

iPhone 4G is rumored to be released in May, announced this January
The year last year, or more specifically the second half of the 2009, was gratefully decorated with major smartphone announcements. Just to name a few let’s bring up in mind iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre coming one after another and followed by the mobile hero of the year - the HTC Hero. Then the long awaited Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 and Motorola Droid made their appearance. By now we have Nexus One added to that lot. iPhone 3GS, despite being a revamped one and a half year old second-gen iPhone is holding very strong to its positions and better still beats the newcomers by an immense rate when it comes to loading a web page, as our colleagues were lucky to discover. If take a look in the future however we might see there an eye-pleasing glow of iPhone 4G coming out in Might, 2010. At least this is what rumor mill has erected.

Inside those affordable digital calipers is a data output. The guys from NerdKits has sent this data to a NerdKit to make an inexpensive DRO (Digital Read Out) for their new metal mill. As usual they have provided a great tutorial so you can also make your own or just learn from the process.

Thanks Humberto.

“These calipers output a synchronous (clocked) digital signal. The caliper periodically outputs a group of 48 bits, with a bit period of about 12μs. The first 24 bits are a signed integer representation of distance, with 20480 bits per inch. The relative timings are important because, although it is a synchronous protocol and each data bit is aligned with a clock edge, the relative times between clock edges (idle times) indicate when a new group of data starts. In particular, we wait for at least ~50μs of quiet in order to indicate that a new set of data is about to begin.”

No detail was spared in the construction of this neo-futuristic PC, which Henk built using a custom metal frame, wood, acrylic and polystyrene panels. Henk (with the help of his devoted wife) put together this extraordinary PC which even features sliding side panels, cool yellow backlighting and a hidden personal display inside. System specs for the pyramid Personal computer include a mini-ITX mobo, an Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7200 CPU, a low-profile GeForce 9400GT graphics card, and compact storage on a 2.5″ hard drive and CF card. Somehow Henk even managed to cram a DVD-RW drive in cramped quarters of the pyramid, since this is a media center Personal computer after all.

Check out the gallery below to see more angles and some of the build while it was in progress.
