rise from your grave, apple tablet development rumors

You just can’t keep a good rumor down. One would think Apple aficionados would have enough to talk about, what with Snow Leopard now gracing the machines of any Mac-owner willing to pony up the paltry $29 Apple asking price.

mactablet

I guess not.

The Financial Times reports that Apple is “racing to offer a portable, fully-featured, tablet-sized personal in time for the Christmas shopping season.” Of course, this is considerably less rumor and a lot more… inevitability. It’s no secret that Apple has been working on a tablet, and speak of it has persisted for, what, nearly two years now? Steve Jobs himself has admitted to canning Apple’s tablet project twice, the first time due to its battery life and the second time due to “insufficient memory.”

As to what this tablet is, exactly, some suspect it’s a multimedia device — the perfect mobile motion picture companion — like an iPod Touch x2. Or maybe x3 or x4. But according to a source of Gizmodo’s, one they claim “has always been 100% reliable,” this 10-inch Apple tablet would also come in the 13-inch and 15-inch variety and run Mac OS X.

If this thing sports Apple’s usual design tropes, it’ll look like something from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, which means I’ll have to buy it. But if anyone were to perfect a sleek, stylish, touch-interface tablet, it’d be Apple. Can you state MacBook Touch?

Guess we’ll find out soon enough. Or maybe not. Who knows? I don’t.

katamari jelly beans: please make these so i can eat some
I’ve no idea where these Katamari Damacy jelly beans came from, but they sure look delicious. The guys at Jelly Belly and Namco need to do a business deal. And I should get a cut. Or at least a lifetime supply. [via Flickr]

rodem next-gen wheelchair doesn’t look like a wheelchair at all

Gundam fans! Veda (Vader?) is real! And it’s in Japan of course. Fortunately the Veda International Robot Research and Development Centre isn’t out to control or enslave humanity. It’s a joint project by robotics company Tmsuk Co. along with 10 other universities and research institutions. Veda’s first project is 0 Raiser. No wait it’s Rodem – a not-wheelchair that looks like the front half of a massive motorcycle.

rodem-robotic-wheelchair-1

The scientists who are developing Rodem want to make the people who use wheelchairs more independent. As high tech as this not-wheelchair looks, it’s shape was dictated mostly by common sense. The half-motorcycle setup makes it easier for users to get on or off the Rodem. It also “promises greater mobility”, though I don’t suppose it’ll zip the elderly around at motorcycle speeds. It’s not visible in the photos, but according to Physorg, users will steer the Rodem using a joystick instead of the handlebars.

rodem-robotic-wheelchair-2

Right now Rodem isn’t much of a robot, but the people at Veda still want to add more features to the not-wheelchair; for example, Tmsuk president Yoichi Takamoto said, “…we could add a new function so it comes to your bedside when you call.” That’s a helpful and robotic feature, Takamoto-sensei. My only concern about the Rodem is it’s lack of a backrest, which means that users won’t be able to take a nap while riding it. My other concern is that it’s not a wheelchair, so people shouldn’t be calling it a wheelchair. It’s a wheelsaddle is what it is.

wahha go go laughing machine looks as creepy as it sounds

The sound bounces off the walls around you, amplifying. You shake it off and walk a bit faster. You can still hear the gears tur – wtf? WTF was that sound? You run. It’s too late when you realize that you were heading towards the source of that sound, it’s too late, all you could consider was go fast, not where to, you turned a corner and then you find yourself face-to-face with this creature:

wahha_go_go_robot

The creature’s mouth/face tilts back, it’s accordion lungs expand – there it is, the gears turning. You scream, but your voice is drowned by what you can only describe as an anime villain and/or pervert’s laugh.

The machine is called wahha go go, and I don’t know what diabolical inclinations motivated Maywa Denki to create this. I’m just thankful that the sound in the video wasn’t loud or I’d have yelped like a tiny girl at a Jonas Brothers concert. Although I also half-expected Happosai to show up, with a sackful of bras on his back.

nokia booklet 3g netbook coming soon, looking awesome

If Apple does release a Tablet Personal computer, fanboys would do well to thank Nokia, because the Finland handset maker was one of the first to come up with Mobile Internet Devices, or MIDs. Now they’re back in the realm of portable computing with the Booklet 3G, a 10-inch, 2.75 lb. Intel Atom-powered netbook that will most likely run Windows 7. As its name implies, the Booklet 3G has built-in 3G wireless connectivity. Further separating the netbook from the bajillion other flavors on the market is its aluminum chassis and its “HD-ready” screen, along with an HDMI port and A-GPS navigation. Sweet.

Nokia-Booklet3G

I wish Nokia would add HSDPA connectivity as well. Portable USB modems – the ones as small as a flash drive – are becoming popular here in the Philippines, but the 3G speeds suck donkey dong, with a very theoretical maximum speed of 384 Kbps. Good thing the Booklet 3G also has WiFi. What I find most interesting about this netbook is the 12-hour battery life. 12 hours! If that’s indeed true, then we should thank Intel for coming up with the Atom. Unless of course it turns out that the netbook only lasts an hour when it’s playing HD content.

Please let it be below $400 please please please. With that kind of battery life plus an HD-capable processor I’ll gladly take back all my netbook-bashing and buy one for myself.
