robo-q optimus prime and bumblebee: little transformers

Just because you’re a robot in disguise doesn’t mean you have to be large. These little little versions of two popular Transformers autobots prove quite the contrary.

The latest in TakaraTomy’s Robo-Q series, these palm-sized Optimus Prime and Bumblebee robots are just too cute to be capable of any real destruction. Now the picture above doesn’t really give you a good idea just how tiny these Transformers are. But this one should…

Each miniature walking robot comes complete with an IR remote control (with built-in robot recharger), and they have the ability to be set to operate on different channels so you and a friend can play at the same time. The tiny Robo-Q robots can automatically detect obstacles and navigate through tight corridors using infrared sensors. And while I’ve never seen Bumblebee and Optimus Prime playing soccer, each Robo-Q includes a tiny ball you can kick around in case you always wanted to play a round of robo-ball.

You can find both Robo-Q Transformers over on Japan’s HimeyaShop for $47.00 each.

In even more game localization news, the atmospheric adventure Fragile is set for release outside Japan. The moody title follows Seto, a young boy traversing a ruined world in search of other people–any other people. Certainly a darker theme than the anime-inspired visuals might at first evoke, but Fragile is painted in dark strokes that suit the story’s underlying despair.

The developers revealed, before the game’s release in Japan, that a great deal of effort and money went into polishing Fragile, so it isn’t altogether surprising the title is being given a opportunity to recoup more of that expense. But whatever the reason, gamers outside of Japan are the ones who’ll benefit here.

There are even rumors of a Japanese language track in addition to full English voice acting, a much-desired yet rare option for many games. But even without the original voice acting, Fragile will be a game to watch (and, uh, play).

Sure, Christmas is nearly seven months away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t begin getting in the spirit really, really early. Especially if you really, really love your retro video games.

I first eyed Hallmark’s keepsake Pac-Man holiday ornament back in December 2008, and grabbed one for my tree then. Now it turns out that they’re starting a collectible arcade machine series, with the recent announcement of a Galaga ornament for 2009. Shweet!

Not only do these incredibly detailed mini arcade cabinet ornaments look great hanging from any tree, they actually light up and play the original game theme music when you press a tiny tiny 1-player begin button on the front panel.

You can still find a handful of the Pac-Man ornaments over on Amazon
, and the you can get the Galaga on your holiday wish list over at Hallmark so you can grab one when it’s released this October. I’m hoping that 2010 brings Dig-Dug.

Low emissions solar powered Silent Sentinel UAV
The unmanned aerial car is a last project of joint efforts of Ascent Solar Technologies and Bye Aerospace. It appears to be an unmanned aerial automobile to be working based on both solar power as well as stored electricity. To create a silent, unmanned aerial automobile, Bye will be applying FJ33 turbofan motor that would take power from a lithium-ion battery while Ascent Solar will be developing photovoltaic panels to be both thin-film and flexible.

For many of us, the days of arcades are long past (and if you’re lucky enough to have one nearby, cherish it!), but we remember plugging in all those quarters with a particular fondness. Well, prepare to have that fondness exploited, in the form of cute miniature arcade cabinets.

Even if it were possible to count the number of hours I wasted on games like OutRun, I wouldn’t want to. The results would be less than glamorous (and might remind me that I could own that BMW by now if I’d saved all those quarters). Would I want a constant reminder of that on my desk? Yes, yes I would. It’s just so cute!

The Sega Taikan Game Collection will be available this fall, and includes five different games: Space Harrier, Super Hang-On, OutRun, Thunderblade and Afterburner. Now if only they were playable….
